However, he isn't one of those guys who finished school and set off to become a musician. The one time British army captain (and latest ina long line of Blunts in the armed forces) served stints as a peacekeeper in Kosovo and guard at Buckingham Palace before hanging up his uniform. His days of carrying a gun behind him, Blunt quickly began turning heads with his soaring vocals and stirring songs. His debut album, Back to Bedlam, has earned widespread praise, including comparisons to the likes of Damien Rice, David Gray and a young Elton John. | | | Features: | |

Good to the last song!Aug 20, 2010 James Blunt may have been overplayed, but when you listen to this entire album, you get why. The level of talent displayed is way above what most "artists" in pop music could ever even hope for. The image he got in the media and pop music scene isn't really who he is, and through the lyrics, that becomes obvious. There are curse words and drug references, so if you just like the radio versions of his singles, you may not want to buy this album. However, if a little honesty in his lyrics won't bother you, the music is incredible. Every song is amazing, and the balance between vocals and instruments is perfect. The songs don't sound the same, but they are cohesive, and the album flows nicely from start to finish. There is a mix of emotions as well. The album begins on a note of hope and happiness, and toward the end there are some sad songs. Beautiful, beautiful music (pun intended).
Awesome album with real songs that actually mean somethingAug 09, 2009 A very good debut album. Yes, he sings like a girl, even he says so but there is something about his voice that is easy to listen to and you do not get tired of it. All the songs are good. Not a clunker in the bunch. Great to see real music being made.
BEWARE: It's addictiveFeb 22, 2009 Blunt is a unique musician. He's a beutiful lyricist (he could have been a poet) and his songs are true, heartfelt. It doesn't matter whether they're about love or not, they're honest and full of human emotion.
He's got a very distinct voice, and when you listen to him, you know that's him. This debut album of his, 'Back to Bedlam', shows clearly that this is an artist that's here to stay.
Some of my favorite songs of the album are 'High', 'Goodbye My Lover', and 'Tears and Rain'. I listen to 'High' and it's just an experience, a movie playing out in my head (unfortunately neither of the videos for the song captured it very well, I guess). 'Goodbye My Lover' is at the same time so personal and so universal and I guess that's why it's a favorite. It's so naked. So human. And 'Tears and rain' has a great melody and the lyrics are wonderful.
Finally, James performing live is excellent. He always gives 100%, we actually see him completely involved with the song. I've had the chance to watch one of his concerts live here in Rio and I absolutely loved it.
Highly recommended.
